Membertou – Welcoming the World

Named for Grand Chief Membertou, Membertou is one of 13 Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia. In 1916, Membertou was located on the shores of Sydney Harbour and in 1926 the community relocated to its present day location, an ever-growing and ever-changing community in the heart of a municipality. In 2002, Membertou became the first ISO 9001 certified aboriginal government in the world, enhancing Membertou’s indigenous economy based on sustainability.

We’kwistoqnik, translated to “where the fir trees are plentiful,” is a Mi’kmaw community nestled alongside the beautiful Bras d’ Or Lakes in eastern Cape Breton. Eskasoni is dedicated to improving the lives of its future generations and strives to be culturally rich and respectful of its ecosystem, based on the concept of shared responsibility. First established in 1832, there were only a few families living in the area. Today, Eskasoni is the largest Aboriginal community east of Montreal with more than 4,000 residents.
